À la fin des années soixante-dix, Joe Cocker s’apprête à vivre une période plutôt troublée de sa carrière. Le plombier de Sheffield force volontiers sur la dope et l’alcool, faisant involontairement sur scène la publicité de certains brasseurs grâce à des T-shirts explicites. Ces flottements ne l’empêchent pas pour autant d’enregistrer, sous la houlette d’Allen Toussaint (grand monsieur de La Nouvelle-Orléans, appuyé pour l’occasion par Dr John !), un somptueux album de reprises (A Whiter Shade of Pale, I Heard It Through the Grapevine)… sa grande spécialité. Un classique de luxe.
