When Joe Cooker, after a life
of grime, lost light and resurrection, picks up on a track, he drags
even the most familiar of standards toward a place of gravity and
power. Having turned 60 this year, Cocker‘s latest offering
is an impeccable collection of soul, R&B and rock classics interpreted
with the instantly recognisable phrasing of a vocalist - a man who
is at terms with life’s vagaries. Whereas in the hands and the
voice of a lesser individual I Who Have Nothing can be a cheese-fest,
when ol’ Joe sings it, the words and the delivery reclaim its
unabashed emotion; U2’s One is naked, regretful and suitably
gravelly; Everybody Hurts features one of his most tender performances
for years. If only Jealous Guy didn’t sound like Chas &
Dave arranged it, this would be hailed as a classic. As it is, we'll
have to settle for merely fantastic. Joe
