If anything’ s going to put Joe
Cocker up where he belongs, as one of the great vocal stylists of
the late 60s, then it’s got to be this impressive set of BBC
Radio 1 recordings. A reminder of the embarrassment of riches that
remain untouched in the vaults, this Cocker collection cooks up alternate,
and somewhat looser-fitting versions of the one-time gas-fitter-turned
soulster’s greatest hits - “With A Little Help From My
Friends”, “Delta Lady” and (the lesser-known-but-maturing-nicely-with-age)
“Marjorine”, plus popular material such as Ashford &
Simpson's “Let’s Get Stoned”, Richie Havens’
“Run Shaker Life” and John Sebastian’s “Darlin’
Be Home Soon”. A nostalgic revival of Lloyd Price’s “Lawdy
Miss Clawdy” was evidence that Cocker’s unique progressive
pop was soon to hit rockier straits. Essentially, though, this catches
the Cock before his crow got too hoarse. |
